FAQ

How long does it take to prepare for the climb?

The length of preparation depends on the difficulty of the climb and your current fitness level. If you already exercise regularly, you can complete the basic preparation in 6–8 weeks. For more demanding climbs, especially at higher altitudes (over 3000 m), it is recommended to dedicate at least 2–3 months to the preparation. It is important to gradually increase the load, combine endurance training (running, hiking, cycling) with strength training and not forget about regeneration. Complete beginners should start slower and give themselves more time.

Is acclimatization necessary even in lower mountains?

At altitudes up to approximately 2000–2500 m, most people do not experience significant problems, so special acclimatization is not necessary. However, from this point on, oxygen deficiency may already occur and the body needs time to adapt. When climbing above 2500 m, it is therefore very important to climb gradually, not to overdo the pace and to include rest days. Acclimatization significantly reduces the risk of altitude sickness, which can manifest as headaches, nausea or fatigue. Ignoring these symptoms can be dangerous.

Will a hyperbaric chamber help with preparation?

A hyperbaric chamber can be useful as a supplement, especially for regeneration and improving oxygenation of the body after a demanding workout. However, it should be noted that it works on the opposite principle to the high mountain environment – it increases the availability of oxygen, while at altitude there is less of it. Therefore, it cannot replace acclimatization or classic training in high altitude conditions. If you want to specifically prepare for high altitude, hypoxic training (simulation of low oxygen) or staying at higher altitudes is more effective.

What equipment should you take for the climb?

Equipment depends on the difficulty and conditions, but the basics are good hiking shoes (already worn in), appropriate clothing in layers and plenty of fluids. Clothing should be adapted to changes in the weather - a functional T-shirt, an insulating layer (e.g. fleece) and a waterproof jacket. Don't forget a hat, gloves and sunglasses, especially at higher altitudes. Equipment such as hiking poles, a headlamp, a first aid kit and a map or GPS are also important. For more demanding climbs, special equipment (crutches, ice axe, helmet) may also be needed.

How to eat properly during a climb?

During the climb, the body uses a lot of energy, so it is important to eat regularly and replenish calories. Easily digestible foods rich in carbohydrates are best - for example, bars, dried fruit, nuts or pastries. Eat smaller portions, but more often, ideally every 1–2 hours. Hydration is also important - you need to drink continuously, even if you do not feel thirsty. At higher altitudes, it is recommended to limit alcohol and heavy meals, which could burden digestion.

How to recognize and treat altitude sickness?

Výšková choroba sa najčastejšie prejavuje bolesťou hlavy, nevoľnosťou, závratmi, stratou chuti do jedla alebo nespavosťou. Mierne príznaky sú pomerne bežné, no netreba ich podceniť. Prevencia spočíva najmä v postupnom stúpaní, dostatočnom oddychu a hydratácii.
